2016 County Junior Spring Meeting at the Grove GC
As usual the Grove course proved a strong test for the field of just under 60 juniors.
Squally showers greeted the early starters. As the morning wore on the weather improved. Although never warm, the sun shone and playing conditions became enjoyable for players and spectators alike. The course, still not not fully dried out from the recent heavy rain, played its full length.
Pennard's Harry Frazer, first out, set the pace with a 76. Starting bogey, bogey Harry dropped one more and had no birdies to be out in 3 over 38. Coming back was a similar story, no birdies and 3 bogeys for another 3 over. However in the circumstances it was a strong round and good enough to win the Senior Division Gross, the Spring Meeting Trophy and the Daily Telegraph.
It was a similar story for Creigiau's Joe Lukaris, 38 out and back gave tying scores. Only a par 3 on the last for Harry to Joe's 4 settled the tie in Harry's favour.
In the U/16 Division Cardiff's Matthew Coombes produced the outstanding round of the day a gross 77 off 11 handicap. This was good enough to give Matthew both the U/16 Gross and Net prizes and the Daily Telegraph Net too. Andrew Brisbane (Southerndown) with an 81 took the 2nd Gross.
The U/14's found the course playing long and an 84 saw Pennard's Oliver Reeves take the Gross prize with Dylan Thomas.
(Pontardawe) just edging out playing partner Ellis Williams (both 88) for 2nd Gross. Leading scores.
The Competition Scratch Score was 73 (3 over SSS) showing just how tough the course played.
Statistically the hardest hole on the day was the 1st. It had only 1 birdie, 10 pars and 48 bogy or worse scores. It played, on average 2 over its par of 5. Something for the coaches perhaps
Our thanks to all at the Grove who, as usual, provided a course that provided good fair test of golf for even the best players, plus the excellent food and hospitality essential for a successful competition.
