Maesteg’s Tom Williams upsets the “Old Guard” to take the honours in the Neath Bell
Great weather and the growing reputation Neath have for providing a fair test of golf meant a full field of 60 players teed off in the first event in the 2019 Order of Merit, The Neath Bell.
The recent dry spell and warm weather enabled the greenkeeper to produce excellent putting surfaces although for the competitors.
The morning round gave a hint of things to come when Maesteg’s Tom Williams returned the only sub-par round off 69 to open up a 2 shot lead over the ever consistent former County Captain Richard Hooper 71.
New County League Secretary Rhys Carhart (Mountain Ash) was 3rd on 72 and Wenvoe Castle’s Dave Barrell a further shot back on 74.
The leaders could not quite reproduce their morning form but Tom’s 75 was just enough to make him the 2019 winner of the Neath Bell and earn 20 Order of Merit Point.
Dave Barrell’s 71 allowed him to tie second place with Richard Hooper, who shot 74 to finish on 145.
Luke Thomas returned an excellent 69 to add to his morning 78 to take 4th place.
Consistent local player Ryan Nedza with rounds of 75 & 73 took 5th place
Our thanks must go to Neath Golf Club for preparing the Course in excellent condition for all the players. Look forward to seeing you again in 2020.
