Wenvoe’s Dave Barrell is 2019 County Champion

A field of 68 teed off the morning round in the County Championship at Royal Porthcawl in breezy but dry conditions. This stayed for the early competitors but the later tee-offs faced increasingly wet conditions. Last year’s champion Nick James (Vale Resort) was one of these but he posted the only sub-Par round of 71.This gave him a two shot lead over Maesteg’s Tom Williams with Mountain Ash player Ian Flower a shot further back.

The afternoon round started in miserable conditions which eased as the day went on. With “serious” rough and wet sand one lapse in concentration cost shots, often lots of them. Leader Nick James was cruising, turning in level Par to increase his morning advantage. A dropped shot on 10 was nothing but the 11 on the Par 5 12th completely derailed Nick’s chances. Wenvoe’s Dave Barrell followedhis morning 75 with another steady performance. Avoiding the pitfalls the course presented he produced another 75 and his two-round total of 150 was enough to become County Champion.

Maesteg’s Tomas Williams (153 was second and Nick James finished third. Ryan Nedza (Neath) retained the Colts’ Championship, his 157 being two shots better than P&K’s Ioan Consitt on 159.

The team Championship went to Neath (Ryan Nedza, Jonathan Owen and Darren Richards) with Mountain Ash (Ian Flower, Luke Thomas and Scott Hillman) second.
