President’s Cup 2019
President’s Cup Final Standings
The introduction of the President’s Cup to the Glamorgan calendar was eagerly anticipated by all the players who qualified through the Order of Merit. The new Match play format, for the top 16 players in the order of merit, was played off at Mountain Ash and Morlais Castle Golf Club on the final weekend in August.
The opening day at Mountain Ash was a wet and windy affair and there were several games that went all the way to the 18th and three games completed on extra holes. The local favourite and number one seed, Ian Flower, only just made it to the quarter finals with a win over Alistair Mason on the 19th Green. Other wins on the opening morning went to Carl Boobier, Tom Williams, Jack Bush, Llewellyn Matthews, Luke Thomas, Oli Young and Ryan Davies.
In the afternoon the conditions improved for the Quarter Finals. Ian Flower took the spoils against Oli Young. Luke Thomas knocked out Ryan Davies and local player Carl Boobier beat much fancied Tom Williams. In the game of the afternoon, Ex Walker Cup player Llew Matthew took on Ex Welsh Amateur Champion Jack Bush. In a keenly fought game between two of the county’s best players experience eventually told and Llew Mathews won the game to go through to the Semi Finals.
The President’s Cup then moved to Morlais Castle on the Sunday morning.
The Semi Finals saw a contrast of games one between Ian Flower and Carl Boobier both members of Mountain Ash and played together in the recent Welsh Team Championship Win. Whilst a friendly game played out it was Ian experience that told in the end and he was the 1st player into the final. A titanic fixture took place in the second semi final between Llew Matthews and County Captain Luke Thomas. Great golf was played between the players but it was Llew who won the game 2&1 with a crucial birdie on the 17th hole.
The Afternoon and the Final. Number one seed Ian Flower and Welsh International Llew Matthews played off for the honour of being the first President’s cup champion. The front nine was close, and with 4 holes to play Ian was 2up. Great birdies at the 15th and 16th levelled the game. Level on the last tee and Ian took advantage of a wonderful drive and approach to birdie the final hold and win the 2019 President’s Cup and the honour of being the inaugural champion.
Our thanks go to both Mountain Ash and Morlais Castle Golf Club for allowing the fixtures to take place. To Ian and all the competitors for making this event one for many years to come.
