Wenvoe Castle 11/09 Mike Gwyther wins 2015 County Mid-Amateur Championship
For a change this "summer" the weather was kind to a County Championship. A strong field took on the test that the Wenvoe Castle course presented. Wenvoe was, as always, in superb condition with fast, firm greens. Neath's Richard Hooper set the early pace with a one over Par 73.This wasn't seriously challenged until Morlais Castle's Mike Gwyther came in with another 73. Having 3 putted 18 Mike was disappointed with "What might have been". However with a number of low handicappers still to come, including 3 Wenvoe players off scratch, it didn't seem that Mike's 73 would be enough. One by one the scores didn't match 73. However Sean Davies with 3 holes to go was under Par and looked all set to post the winning score. However a 5, 6, 5 finish put paid to Sean's chances and it was down to the count-back. With the last hole 3 putt Mike wasn't confident but after many years of trying the golfing gods were with him and he became Champion on count back from Richard. Sean was third. Another Wenvoe player, County Seniors' Captain Ian Henderson, off 6 handicap, had a 74 and would have taken third gross but his Nett 68 won the best Nett prize by two strokes from another Wenvoe player Terry O'Grady.
It was fitting that the Championship, as always, was played in the spirit that typifies good competitive golf. All players enjoyed the test (although like all tests sometimes the results are what we wanted). The Championship ultimately went to a player who typifies the spirit of Mid Am golf, although he had to wait until he qualified as a Senior to win it! Good weather, a golf course in great condition and a worthy deserving Champion. That sums up a great day.
Our thanks are due to the Wenvoe Castle club for providing, as always, everything necessary for a successful Championship.
